Music with meaning: Crash and Burn

This article was originally written to be read out in class. We were asked to choose a song and then talk about what that piece of music means to us. As a Savage Garden fan, i chose 'Crash and Burn' because it is probably been one of the most influential pieces of music to me.

Music with Meaning: Crash and Burn by Savage Garden

I chose this song because I think it’s the song that has made the largest impact on my life. It’s a song that tells you that it’s ok to be down and that we’ve all been there. It also says ‘I’ll help you like you’ve helped me.’ I think this is very true to the song because it says that just as the artist has found it helpful to write this song, listening to it will help you too.

Darren Hayes, who wrote the lyrics said, “I wanted this song to be something that says, look, everything is going to be OK; it always is in the end. It's like a lullaby to myself and for the people that listen to this record to see us through the dark moments.”

And a lullaby, I think it is. It’s rare to find a song that can lift you up yet you can also cry to. ‘There’s always been hurting and pain and when it’s over you’ll breathe again’ It’s a song you can certainly live your life by, we all need to crash and burn sometimes and when we do there’ll always be something there to help us, be it a friend or even piece of music.

Whereas most of the Affirmation album dwells on pain, this song tells you a way of getting through it. It’s certainly made my life seem a lot easier and can really lift a weight from your shoulders. It’s just like when you were a small child and you’d fall down and graze your knee and your mum would kiss it better and tell you it’s all going to be ok.

It is also a song about communicating and talking about your problems. ‘Let me be the one you call, if you jump I’ll break your fall, lift you up and fly away with you into the night.’ Those lines say to me ‘Tell me if you’re hurting and I’ll be there for you, I won’t let you feel any lower than you do right now.’

It’s also apparent in the video that the song is talking about communication, much of it is in sign language and it ends with the words written on the screen, ‘Communicate, anyway, anyhow.’ It’s saying that no matter how you do it, you must find away of getting some of the hurt and bad feeling off your chest before you spiral darker. This message spoke volumes to me.

Whenever I feel down, I do try to listen to this song or keep it in the back of my mind cause it will all be ok and although the light at the end of the tunnel may seem far away, it is there. Quoting the line, ‘When it’s over you’ll breathe again’ yet again, this is the message from the song and I think it is a very strong, important one.
